The best way for kids to learn to think is to read a lot and write a lot. Working in groups and presenting projects to the class helps tremendously, especially when the students are the ones who choose the topic, do their own research, and come to their own conclusions. Then they have to figure out how to convince their audience of the validity of their premise. I speak from experience--this really works. It's lots of work for the teacher, but the kids think it's fun to think!
